Brown Health’s financial performance has been impacted by challenges in its Massachusetts operations, despite continued profitability in Rhode Island, according to a recent report.

The organization faced setbacks at Hawthorne Physicians Group, where a difficult rollout of electronic medical record (EMR) software resulted in increased costs and lost time. This implementation issue contributed to operational inefficiencies within the group.

Additionally, patient volumes declined at St. Anne’s and Morton hospitals, both former Steward Health facilities now under Brown Health’s management. The reduced patient numbers at these Massachusetts hospitals have further strained the system’s overall financial results.

In contrast, Brown Health’s Rhode Island operations have remained profitable, helping to offset some of the losses from its Massachusetts sites. The performance gap highlights the differing operational environments and challenges faced across state lines.

These developments underscore the ongoing difficulties healthcare systems can encounter during technology transitions and in adapting to changing patient demand, particularly in newly acquired or managed facilities.
